12 – Amina

“That was the mayor.”

Candace’s announcement caused Elias and I to trade questioning looks. He frowned. I raised both shoulders in a quick shrug.

“Her office?” he asked.

“No.” Candace rested her elbows on the arm rest of her chair and steepled her fingers. “Deborah Wagner herself.”

“Do you normally get calls from Wagner?” I asked.

Elias parked in one of the overpriced leather chairs on the other side of her desk. I camped out in a chair near the bookcase, with my viola case propped up on the side of it.

“She wants to reassure us she has her best people working to find Jacqueline’s and Gisselle’s murderer?” asked Elias.

Sarcasm coated his voice thicker than gumbo rue, not that I blamed him. Wagner broke most of the campaign promises she made to the supernatural community during her mayoral run four years ago. I didn’t care about the mayor’s call. More than anything I wanted to leave. Preferably go home to my apartment, but work would suffice. The headache that started before the meeting, worsened when I sat across from Bodhi and watched him try to hide the look of betrayal when I revealed I was a völva. And why shouldn’t he have felt that way. Two years and he found out something significant about me with a group of strangers.

Under normal circumstances I would bemoan my situation to Gisselle. What I wouldn’t give to walk into her kitchen and sit down at her table with a cup of hot chocolate. To look into her eyes. Those eyes comforted without a word uttered. I traded my chair for standing in front of the window staring down at the traffic on Michigan Avenue. Along the way, I passed my palm over my cheeks, and wiped the wetness from my face. I wanted my aunt to be alive and safe in her yellow house.

Despite the sunshine outside, I couldn’t get the image of my mother lying on the snow out of my head. Cold seeped into my bones, and a growl resonated just to my right. I snapped my head in the direction of the vocalized warning, but only leather-bound law books lined Candace’s shelves.

“You can’t be serious?” The surprise in Elias’s voice brought me back to their conversation.

“I know it’s not how we traditionally do things,” Candace stated, and continued. “But if the mayor wants to host it, maybe this is a good thing. Mama was always fighting to get more recognition for supernaturals. For us to be seen as true residents of this city and not just beings who live in it.”

I blinked and tried to piece together what I missed. “And you think by letting her turn mother and Gisselle’s funeral into a public spectacle that will achieve that goal?”

“It’s a start. And it’s not a spectacle, it’s honoring their memory.” Candace rebutted.

“It’s bullshit,” I replied.

“Sorry babe, but I agree with Amina.”

“It’s a step in the right direction.”

“It’s optics,” he countered and waved his hand. “Political maneuvering or whatever you want to call it.
